Applicants must:
- Be UK domiciled.
- Hold an undergraduate degree in the life sciences or a related subject.
- Not already have a Masters’ degree.
- Be from a low-income household background (e.g., received a full maintenance loan or Special Support loan during undergraduate studies).
- And/or belong to one of the following ethnicity categories: Black African, Black Caribbean, Black Other, Mixed – White and Black Caribbean, Mixed – White and Black African, or Other mixed background.
Job Description
Successful applicants will commence an MSc in Biotechnology in January 2027. During the masters’ year, scholars will work closely with a supervisory team to further develop their research proposal before progressing to the PhD phase. Scholars will receive interdisciplinary research methods training, secondary discipline training, and ongoing development support. Doctoral scholars can also join the University of Essex’s ‘Centre for Environment and Society’.

The proposal should broadly define the research and identify which of the four secondary disciplines (Law, Government/Political Science, Business, or Sociology) will be integrated into the project. No prior knowledge of the additional discipline is required.
