Research Area

The research focuses on text and image feature learning for news ecosystems. Key aspects include:

  • Analysing the complex multidimensional feature space of visual information to support data-driven journalism.
  • Experiments addressing accountability, transparency, inclusiveness, and misinformation.
  • Applying multimodal deep learning technologies.
  • Investigating large collections of newspaper articles on migration-related topics using text and image analysis.

Eligibility / Qualification

Candidates should have a keen interest in academic and professional development and meet the following criteria:

  • A PhD degree in Computer Science or Artificial Intelligence.
  • Demonstrable skills in machine learning.
  • Curiosity about societal issues and employing AI for the public benefit.
  • Strong teamwork skills for successful stakeholder collaboration.
  • Comfortable conducting multidisciplinary research and interacting with stakeholders.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English.

Job Description

As a postdoc, you will conduct research in close collaboration with a multidisciplinary team. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Testing, validating, and evaluating methods on large-scale, interoperable collections.
  • Cooperating with societal partners, including the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision, the National Archive, and the National Library of the Netherlands.
  • Collaborating with the HAICu fieldlab ‘Deep Journalism’ to develop functionality that searches for similar topics across different archives and modalities to support news journalists.
