Summary

The Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to join the Automated Nanomaterials Engineering (ANiME) Research Line, coordinated by Dr. Milena Arciniegas, at the Center for Convergent Technologies (CCT) in Genoa, Italy. The position is funded by the European Research Council (ERC) under the project EVA – Tailoring Organic-Inorganic Layered Structures to Build Functional Graded 2D Nanomaterials for Advanced Nanointerfaces. The researcher will work in an interdisciplinary environment integrating advanced wet-chemistry synthesis, automation, and digital infrastructures to accelerate the discovery of next-generation functional materials.

Eligibility / Qualification

Essential Requirements

  • Education: Ph.D. in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • Research Experience: Demonstrated experience in the synthesis of organic and inorganic functional materials, with strong expertise in layered materials, hybrid semiconductors, or related low-dimensional systems.
  • Characterization Skills: Hands-on experience in the analysis and interpretation of single-crystal and/or powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) data, along with structural, optical, and optoelectronic characterization techniques.
  • Publications: A strong publication track record in international peer-reviewed journals.
  • Language: Excellent command of written and spoken English.

Additional / Desirable Skills

  • Experience with layered halide perovskites, thin-film formation, and surface functionalization.
  • Familiarity with automation, high-throughput experimentation, or data-driven materials research.
  • Knowledge of solid-state magnetic resonance techniques.
  • Proven experience in mentoring/supervising junior researchers (e.g., Ph.D. and master’s students).

Job Description & Responsibilities

  • Synthesis & Protocol Design: Design, synthesize, and optimize organic-inorganic layered materials using wet-chemistry approaches; develop new synthetic protocols for low-dimensional materials.
  • Material Characterization: Carry out structural, optical, and optoelectronic characterization of synthesized functional materials.
  • Project & Workflow Development: Formulate and execute independent research while actively contributing to ERC project milestones and integrating automation/data-driven methodologies into laboratory workflows.
  • Data Analysis & Dissemination: Analyze experimental and crystallographic data, author scientific papers for peer-reviewed journals, and present results at international conferences.
  • Mentorship & Collaboration: Supervise PhD students and research fellows while collaborating within an international, multidisciplinary team.
