PhD Studentship in Fungal Biology and Host-Pathogen Interactions at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland

Postdoc in Ireland

Summary

Trinity College Dublin is inviting applications for a fully funded PhD Studentship focusing on Aspergillus fumigatus pathogenesis, host-pathogen interactions, and antifungal drug resistance. Based at the Sir Patrick Dun Laboratory on the St. James’s Hospital Campus, the successful candidate will conduct cutting-edge basic and translational research within an active, multidisciplinary team of scientists and clinicians.

Research Area

The research is centered on Medical Mycology, Molecular Microbiology, and Immunology. Specifically, the project investigates:

  • The cell biology and virulence factors of the opportunistic human fungal pathogen Aspergillus fumigatus.
  • Mechanisms of action of novel antifungal therapies and antifungal resistance pathways.
  • Host-pathogen interactions, specifically how fungal pathogens interact with and evade innate immune cells (macrophages and neutrophils).
  • Application of advanced methodologies including confocal laser scanning microscopy, automated fluorescence live-cell imaging, microbial genetics, and protein biochemistry.

Location

Sir Patrick Dun Laboratory, St. James’s Hospital Campus, Trinity College Dublin, Dublin, Ireland.

Scholarship Description

Aspergillus fumigatus is a ubiquitous environmental mould capable of causing severe pulmonary and systemic diseases in humans, ranging from allergic conditions to life-threatening invasive aspergillosis. Due to rising antifungal resistance and delayed diagnostics, fungal infections remain a major global health challenge.

As a PhD researcher in this program, you will:

  • Conduct high-impact basic and translational biomedical research within a collaborative setting alongside PhD students, MSc scholars, postdoctoral scientists, and clinicians.
  • Cultivate microorganisms, isolate primary immune cells, and generate genetically modified fungal strains.
  • Utilize advanced molecular biology, cell biology, and microscopy suites to decipher pathogenic mechanisms and test therapeutic targets.
  • Present research findings at national and international conferences and publish in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Eligibility / Qualifications

Applicants are expected to meet the following criteria:

  • A Bachelor’s (Honours) or Master’s degree in Microbiology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Immunology, Biotechnology, or a related biological sciences field.
  • Strong background and hands-on laboratory experience in molecular biology, cell culture, or microbiological techniques.
  • High motivation for research, intellectual curiosity, and ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • Trinity College Dublin actively encourages applications from diverse backgrounds, including international candidates, individuals with disabilities, and researchers returning from career breaks.

How to Apply

Eligible candidates should prepare their application as a single PDF file containing:

  • A comprehensive cover letter / Letter of Interest outlining motivation and relevant experience.
  • An up-to-date Curriculum Vitae (CV).
  • Academic transcripts and degree certificates.
  • Contact details of up to three academic referees.
