Postdoc in Plant Biochemistry at University of Copenhagen (UCPH), Denmark

The University of Copenhagen has four campus areas. As distances in Copenhagen are relatively small, it is easy to get from one campus to the other either by bicycle or public transportation. The campus areas are integrated into the city of Copenhagen and students use the facilities available in the city, adding a lively buzz to the streets and cafés of Copenhagen.

The Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences at the University of Copenhagen (UCPH) invites applications for an 18-month Postdoctoral Fellowship in Plant Biochemistry. Funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation, this research project focuses on elucidating metabolic pathways for the bioproduction of biological nitrification inhibitors (BNIs).

Job Description & Research Project

Excessive fertilizer application in modern agriculture is a major driver of global greenhouse gas emissions. Biological nitrification inhibitors (BNIs) present a sustainable pathway to mitigate nitrogen loss and reduce agricultural emissions. However, the exact biosynthetic enzymes and modes of action for many BNIs remain uncharacterized.

This postdoctoral project builds on a newly developed pipeline to identify and characterize novel BNI compounds. By integrating bioinformatics, biochemistry, and molecular biology, the researcher will work to uncover missing biosynthetic enzymes and reconstruct complete metabolic pathways in yeast for the sustainable bioproduction of BNIs.

The successful candidate will join the Dynamic Metabolons Research Group led by Associate Professor Tomas Laursen. The group investigates the spatial organization of biosynthetic pathways and the production and root secretion of bioactive plant compounds.
