Postdoctoral Position in Aquatic Biogeochemistry and Remote Sensing – University of Basel, Switzerland

PhD Fellowship IN Switzerland

Summary

The Aquatic and Isotope Biogeochemistry Group in the Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of Basel invites applications for a two-year postdoctoral position. This research project, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), investigates how algal production and organic matter export regulate microbial nitrogen cycling and nitrous oxide (N₂O) production in lakes, particularly in response to climate change.

Designation

Postdoctoral Researcher (80-100%)

Research Area

Aquatic Biogeochemistry, Microbial Nitrogen Cycling, Greenhouse Gas Production, and Satellite Remote Sensing.

Location

Basel, Switzerland (Fieldwork focused on Lake Baldegg, Switzerland).

Eligibility/Qualification

  • Education: A PhD in biogeochemistry, environmental sciences, limnology, aquatic microbial ecology, or a related field, completed by the starting date.
  • Field & Lab Experience: Proven experience in aquatic fieldwork and laboratory research, ideally involving nutrient cycling, microbial process measurements, or greenhouse gases.
  • Technical Skills: Experience with satellite remote sensing and environmental data analysis (especially for inland waters) is considered a strong asset.
  • Logistics: Ability to organize and conduct regular field campaigns; a valid driver’s license is desirable. A boating license is an asset.
  • Communication: Strong English communication and scientific writing skills; German language skills are valued but not required.

Job Description

The successful candidate will connect water-column processes to patterns observable at the lake surface using seasonal field observations, stable isotope tracer experiments, and biogeochemical modelling. Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading and coordinating seasonal lake sampling campaigns, including environmental profiling and sediment trap deployment.
  • Designing and performing stable isotope tracer incubations to quantify nitrification and N₂O production.
  • Conducting laboratory analyses of nutrients, dissolved gases, and organic matter.
  • Integrating field measurements with satellite observations to link surface productivity with organic matter export.
  • Collaborating on data synthesis and biogeochemical modelling within an international research environment.

How to Apply

Interested candidates should upload their application via the University of Basel online platform. The application package must include:

  • A motivation letter (maximum 1 page) outlining research interests and relevant experience.
  • A comprehensive CV including a publication list.
  • Copies of relevant academic degrees.
  • Contact details for two professional references.

Questions regarding the position can be addressed to Dr. Cameron Callbeck (cameron.callbeck@unibas.ch) or Prof. Dr. Moritz Lehmann (moritz.lehmann@unibas.ch).

Last Date for Apply

Review of applications will begin October 19th, 2026, and will continue until the position is filled. The planned starting date is January 2027.
