Scholarship Description & Benefits
The President’s PhD Scholarship provides comprehensive financial and professional development support for 3.5 years of study:
- Full Tuition Fees: Complete coverage of home or overseas tuition fees.
- Living Allowance: A tax-free stipend of £26,500 per annum to assist with living costs.
- Consumables Fund: An annual grant of £2,000 for research consumables during the first 3 years of study.
- Cohort & Career Development: Access to bespoke events, training, and development programmes through the Early Career Researcher Institute (ECRI).
- Full access to postgraduate support services, including specialized international and disability student support.
Eligibility Criteria
The scholarship is open to high-achieving applicants from the UK and all international countries:
- Academic Excellence: Applicants must hold or expect to achieve a First Class Honours (or equivalent) in an undergraduate or integrated Master’s degree; OR achieve a Distinction in a standalone Master’s qualification.
- Nationality: Open to candidates of any nationality (Home, EU, and International).
- New Applicants Only: Open exclusively to new PhD applicants. Current registered Imperial PhD students are not eligible.
- Supervisor Agreement: Applicants must secure agreement from an eligible Imperial academic supervisor prior to applying.
- Alternate Pathways & Extenuating Circumstances: Candidates with non-traditional career pathways or extenuating circumstances affecting academic grades may be considered via department recommendation.
How to Apply
There is no separate scholarship application form. Applicants apply directly through the Imperial admissions system by following these steps:
- Identify and Contact a Supervisor: Review department research pages and contact an eligible supervisor who agrees to supervise your proposed doctoral project.
- Submit an Online Application: Complete the doctoral application via the Imperial Online Admissions Portal.
- Select Funding Option: Within the ‘Funding’ section of the application’s additional questions tab, select the option to be considered for the President’s PhD Scholarship scheme.
- Upload Supporting Documents: Submit a 2-page document containing your personal statement on page 1 (motivation and background) and your research proposal on page 2.
- Provide Referees: Provide the contact details of two academic referees (excluding your proposed PhD supervisor).

Applications are reviewed in three rounds throughout the academic cycle:
- Round 1 Deadline: 2 November 2026 (Outcome notification by 31 January 2027)
- Round 2 Deadline: 11 January 2027 (Outcome notification by 15 April 2027)
