PhD Scholarship: Dynamic Space–Time Interfaces for High-Speed THz Beam Control, Netherlands

Postdoc in Netherlands

Summary

Explore the cutting edge of physics with a fully funded PhD scholarship focusing on dynamic space–time interfaces for high-speed Terahertz (THz) beam control. This project, part of the EU-funded SPARK Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Network, delves into how THz interfaces changing on the timescale of the wave itself can enable novel phenomena like frequency conversion, dynamic beam steering, and nonreciprocal propagation. You will develop, model, fabricate, and experimentally characterize devices that combine subwavelength spatial control with high modulation rates, primarily targeting the 0.3–1 THz regime. This interdisciplinary research offers a unique opportunity to contribute to future wireless communication, radar, and sensing technologies.

Scholarship Description

This PhD project offers a stimulating environment within the Photonics and Semiconductor Nanophysics (PSN) group at TU/e, part of the broader Department of Applied Physics and Science Education. You will engage in a comprehensive research cycle, from conceptual development to experimental validation. Key activities include:

  • Developing concepts for fast spatial and temporal modulation of THz waves.
  • Modelling wave interactions with dynamically changing interfaces.
  • Designing structures combining subwavelength spatial control with high modulation rates.
  • Exploring suitable modulation mechanisms (e.g., MEMS-based architectures).
  • Fabricating and experimentally characterizing resulting devices.
  • Building THz experiments to study beam steering, frequency shifts, and nonreciprocal response.
  • Demonstrating GHz-rate two-dimensional spatiotemporal beamforming for reconfigurable and nonreciprocal THz communication.

The project provides extensive training through SPARK network activities, workshops, and conferences, alongside opportunities for international collaboration with academic and industrial partners across Europe.
