Summary
The Department of Physics at the University of Jyväskylä is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to join the Condensed Matter Theory group within the Centre of Excellence in Quantum Materials (QMAT). This fixed-term position, starting earliest on December 1, 2026, or as agreed, is for two years with a possible extension to a third year. The successful candidate will engage in cutting-edge research exploring mesoscopic phenomena at the intersection of superconductivity and other correlated states, focusing on electrical, radio-frequency, and optical responses.
Designation
Postdoctoral Researcher
Research Area
Condensed Matter Theory, specifically investigating mesoscopic phenomena arising from the interplay of superconductivity with other correlated states and orders. Potential specific research directions include:
- Cavity effects on superconductivity
- Superconducting LEDs and other superconductor–semiconductor hybrid devices
- Ferroelectric Josephson junctions
- Interplay of superconductivity with multiferroics and textured magnets
- Parafermion physics arising from the coupling of superconductors to fractional quantum Hall edge states
The theoretical framework will primarily utilize Keldysh path-integral and nonequilibrium Green-function methods, complemented by numerical approaches based on tensor networks.
Location
University of Jyväskylä, Jyväskylä, Finland
Eligibility/Qualification
Required Qualifications:
- A doctoral degree in physics or a related field, with a thesis on a theoretical topic.
- A strong foundation in condensed matter physics, quantum physics, and statistical mechanics, including their formal tools.
- High proficiency in spoken and written English.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Considered an Asset:
- Knowledge of Keldysh field theory and/or quasiclassical Green’s functions.
- Experience with Tensor network methods (e.g., MPS, PEPS).
- Understanding of the theory of superconductivity, ferroelectricity, or other correlated electronic phases of matter.
The PhD degree must be completed before the starting date of the position.
Job Description
The Postdoctoral Researcher will be an integral part of the Condensed Matter Theory group, contributing to basic research that advances the understanding of quantum engineered materials. Key responsibilities include:
- Conducting research within the Centre of Excellence in Quantum Materials (QMAT), with guidance from Professor Tero Heikkilä and Research Fellow Stefan Ilić.
- Developing and applying theoretical and/or computational methods for correlated quantum materials, including Keldysh formalism for nonequilibrium steady-state and rf-driven transport in mesoscopic systems.
- Utilizing computational facilities such as the University of Jyväskylä cluster or the CSC national scientific computing centre when required.
- Presenting research findings and publishing scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner.
The group is also an active member of the JoGate EU project, Finnish Quantum Flagship, and the SuperC and Simons collaborations on superconductivity.
How to Apply
Applicants must ensure their ORCID profile (https://orcid.org) is up to date and publications are publicly visible (visibility set to ‘Everyone’). Applications must be submitted through the university’s recruitment system and include the following documents in English and PDF format:
- A Curriculum Vitae, prepared according to good scientific practice (using The Finnish Advisory Board on Research Integrity template).
- A short and informal motivation/cover letter (maximum 2 pages) detailing research interests, career goals, and relevant experience.
- A numbered list of all scientific and other publications, following the guidelines of the Research Council of Finland.
- Relevant degree certificate (highest degree).
Applications sent via email will not be considered.
