Postdoctoral Researchers in Psychiatric Genomics and Data Science at Karolinska Institutet, Sweden

Study in Sweden

Summary

Karolinska Institutet (KI), specifically the Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (MEB) and the KI Psychiatric Genomics Institute (KI-PGI), is seeking 1-2 highly motivated Postdoctoral Researchers. These NIH-funded, full-time positions offer a unique opportunity to contribute to high-quality medical research aimed at improving the understanding of psychiatric disorders and outcomes. The successful candidates will engage in population-based psychiatric research, leveraging large-scale data analysis, advanced statistical modeling, machine learning, and genetic epidemiological methods in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment.

Designation

Postdoctoral Researcher

Research Area

  • Psychiatric Genomics
  • Data Science
  • Population-based Psychiatric Research
  • Genetic Epidemiology
  • Biostatistics
  • Machine Learning in Health Data

Location

Solna Campus, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden

Eligibility/Qualification

Required Qualifications:

  • A PhD or a foreign degree equivalent to a Swedish PhD in epidemiology, public health, biostatistics, data science, genetics, psychiatry, or a related field. (Requirement must be fulfilled by the employment decision date. Completion within the last three years is an advantage, but exceptions can be made for special reasons.)
  • Experience in population-based research, including analysis of large-scale longitudinal health data, electronic health records, clinical data, and/or other routinely collected healthcare data.
  • Experience applying advanced epidemiological and statistical methods to investigate disease trajectories, risk factors, predictors, clinical outcomes, or treatment patterns in complex disorders.
  • Experience applying advanced statistical genetics and genomics methods (e.g., GWAS, PRS analyses, family-based study designs).
  • Strong programming and data management skills, with proficiency in statistical software (e.g., R, Python, SAS, Stata) and experience with large, complex datasets.
  • Experience with reproducible research practices, data-driven analytical approaches, and statistical modeling.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English, including scientific writing, manuscript preparation, and publishing in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Good organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple research tasks independently and address complex analytical and methodological challenges.

Meritorious Qualifications:

  • Experience working in psychiatric epidemiology, particularly with depression and related outcomes.
  • Experience using Swedish national registers or other large-scale population-based healthcare databases (e.g., UK-Biobank).
  • Experience working with large-scale computing infrastructure, including Linux servers, relational databases (SQL), and shell scripting (e.g., Bash) for data management, processing, and analysis.
  • Experience working with large collaborative research projects involving multidisciplinary teams across epidemiology, biostatistics, clinical medicine, and data science.

Job Description

The successful candidate will join the KI Psychiatric Genomics Institute (KI-PGI) at MEB, led by Dr. Lu Yi. The mission involves:

  • Contributing to research projects investigating the development, progression, and outcomes of psychiatric disorders using comprehensive epidemiological, clinical, and genomic data.
  • Working closely with the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium (PGC) and Nordic collaborators.
  • Applying advanced analytical approaches, including statistical modeling, machine learning, and/or genetic epidemiological methods, to study disease trajectories, risk factors, treatment patterns, and sources of heterogeneity in psychiatric disorders.
  • Responsibility for data management and analysis, interpretation and dissemination of research findings.
  • Manuscript preparation and presentation of results in scientific and collaborative settings.
  • Contributing to reproducible, high-quality research aimed at improving understanding of psychiatric illness and identifying factors associated with different clinical outcomes.

This is a fixed-term position for two years, with the possibility of extension.

How to Apply

Applications must be submitted through the Varbi recruitment system and include the following documents in English or Swedish:

  • PhD certificate
  • A complete resumé, including date of thesis defense, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work.
  • A complete list of publications.
