Summary
A postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Rebecca Tarvin at the University of California, Berkeley. The successful candidate will study the genetic and physiological basis of kleptocnidy in nudibranch mollusks as part of an NSF-funded project in collaboration with the American Museum of Natural History. This is an excellent opportunity for a highly motivated researcher to contribute to cutting-edge research in evolutionary and physiological biology within a dynamic academic environment.

Job Description
The postdoctoral scholar will join Dr. Rebecca Tarvin’s lab in the Department of Integrative Biology and the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology at UC Berkeley. The research focuses on understanding the genetic and physiological mechanisms behind kleptocnidy (the theft and storage of microscopic stinging structures, nematocysts) in nudibranch mollusks, particularly Californian species. This involves investigating whether this unique process evolved through specialization of phagocytosis.
Key Responsibilities:
- Carry out original scientific research related to dietary theft in nudibranchs, including animal husbandry, genomics, molecular biology, physiology, and field work within the U.S. (International field work may be an opportunity).
- Write and publish peer-reviewed papers and other scholarly material on the research results.
- Present scientific results at professional meetings, scientific institutions, and, when appropriate, to the media and popular audiences.
- Opportunity to develop new projects within the lab’s research program.
Position Details:
- Percent Time: 100%
- Anticipated Start: Fall 2026
- Position Duration: Two years with the possibility of extension based on performance and funding availability.
- Salary Range: The UC postdoc salary scales set the minimum pay determined by experience level at appointment. The current minimum salary range for this position is $71,491 – $79,727 (refer to Table 23 for current scales).
How to Apply
Applicants must submit their application through the UC Berkeley AP Recruit system.
Application Requirements:
- Curriculum Vitae: Your most recently updated C.V.
- Cover Letter: A letter outlining your interest and qualifications for the position.
