Research Area
The project focuses on the intersection of quantum physics, materials science, and molecular chemistry. Key topics include:
- Optically addressable solid-state electronic spins for quantum sensing and optical quantum networks.
- Ground state and excited state molecular spin dynamics using homebuilt optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) instruments.
- Establishing structure-function relationships to design novel molecular spin qubit candidates.
- Investigating spin defects in solid-state host systems such as hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) and chemically tunable molecular frameworks.
Location
The post will be based at the Department of Materials, Parks Road, Oxford, OX1 3PH, UK, with close collaborative links to the Departments of Chemistry and Physics at Oxford, as well as partners at the University of Cambridge.
Eligibility & Qualifications
Candidates must satisfy the following minimum requirements:
- Hold a PhD (or be near completion of a PhD) in molecular spin physics, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR), solid-state quantum physics, materials science, or a closely related discipline.
- Hands-on experience in building, modifying, or operating optical spectroscopy and magnetic resonance setups.
- A solid publication record or demonstrable ability to produce high-impact peer-reviewed research papers.
- Strong presentation skills suitable for international conferences and cross-departmental seminars.
- Willingness to support, train, and mentor junior team members and PhD students.
Job Description & Responsibilities
The successful applicant will work within a dynamic team dedicated to deciphering the design rules that govern molecular spin coherence, optical properties, and spin initialisation under ambient conditions. Core responsibilities include:
- Designing, constructing, and executing experiments using a specialized homebuilt ODMR experimental platform.
- Analyzing optical and spin resonance data to formulate structure-function relationships for candidate spin qubits.
- Collaborating closely with synthetic chemists, materials scientists, and physicists across Oxford and the University of Cambridge.
- Disseminating research discoveries through manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals and presentations at major international conferences.
- Participating in the day-to-day operation of the laboratory, safety protocols, and co-supervision/training of graduate research students.
