Designation
Marie Curie Early Stage Researcher (PhD Fellow)
The appointee will register as a full-time PhD candidate at the University of Warwick while being employed on a fixed-term research contract.
Research Area
The fellowship focuses on Sustainable Offshore Renewable Energy, Civil & Geotechnical Engineering, Computational Mechanics, and Applied Environmental Data Science. Specific emphasis is placed on applying machine learning and numerical modeling to large geospatial, tidal, and meteorological datasets to study soil-structure-environment interactions for offshore wind turbines.
Location
School of Engineering, University of Warwick, Coventry, CV4 7AL, United Kingdom. The position also includes planned international research secondments to academic and industrial partner institutions across Europe.
Scholarship Description
Funded by the European Union through the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Doctoral Networks, the POSEIDON project aims to develop sustainable and environmentally compatible offshore windfarms. Based in Professor Xueyu Geng’s Built Environment and Sustainability Research Cluster, the researcher will:
- Conduct pioneering research into soil characterisation, foundation design, and structural response in offshore environments.
- Utilise machine learning algorithms and computational tools to analyse multi-source marine and atmospheric data.
- Participate in collaborative training events, workshops, and international secondments with European academic and industrial partners.
- Register for and successfully complete a doctoral degree (PhD) at the University of Warwick.
Eligibility and Qualifications
Applicants must satisfy both the academic requirements and the standard MSCA Early Stage Researcher mobility criteria:
Academic Qualifications
- A Master’s degree (MSc or equivalent) in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Ocean/Offshore Engineering, Applied Mechanics, Naval Architecture, or a closely related discipline.
- Demonstrated capacity to deliver high-quality independent research with an understanding of experimental and numerical techniques.
- Strong programming and numerical skills with demonstrated proficiency in at least one language: Python, MATLAB, or C++ (specifically for automation, data analysis, or machine learning).
- Prior experience in computational mechanics as well as laboratory testing for soil characterisation.
- Fluent spoken and written English, with excellent interpersonal and project delivery skills.
MSCA Eligibility Criteria
- No Prior PhD: Applicants must not have been awarded a doctoral degree prior to appointment.
- Research Experience: Candidates must be in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of their research career since obtaining the degree that qualifies them to embark on a doctorate.
- Mobility Rule: Candidates must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the United Kingdom for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately preceding their recruitment date.
