PhD Scholarship: Supramolecular Interactions in Organic Mixed Ionic-Electronic Conductors at TU Eindhoven, Netherlands

Postdoc in Netherlands

Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) is offering a fully funded PhD position to investigate how molecular-scale interactions determine the real-world performance of functional materials. This research focuses on Organic Mixed Ionic-Electronic Conductors (OMIECs), which are essential for future technologies such as neuromorphic computing, bioelectronics, and energy storage.

Research Area

The project sits at the intersection of Supramolecular Chemistry and Organic Electronics. It involves studying the bidirectional interplay between OMIEC doping and supramolecular interactions using operando characterization and spectroelectrochemistry.

Location

Eindhoven, Noord-Brabant, Netherlands (TU/e Campus).

Eligibility/Qualification

The successful candidate must meet the following requirements:

  • An MSc degree in Chemistry, Physics, Material Science, or a related field.
  • Essential experience with functional material characterization.
  • Preferred experience in spectroscopy or electrochemistry.
  • Prior knowledge of organic semiconductors or supramolecular chemistry is highly valued.
  • Excellent command of spoken and written English.
  • Strong analytical skills and a passion for hands-on experimental research.

Scholarship Description

In this PhD project, you will uncover how intermolecular interactions and supramolecular morphology govern the functionality of OMIECs. These soft materials conduct both electrons and ions, making them ideal for solar fuels and in-material computing. However, their complex reorganization during operation requires new characterization methods.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing operando cells and experimental setups to probe molecular packing.
  • Using spectroelectrochemistry to follow changes in supramolecular organization during electrochemical doping.
  • Collaborating with interdisciplinary teams at the Institute for Complex Molecular Systems.
  • Contributing to teaching and supervision of students (approx. 10-15% of the role).

Benefits:

  • Full-time employment for four years with a competitive salary.
  • 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% year-end bonus.
  • Generous leave options (29 to 41 days per year).
  • Access to high-quality training programs and mental health support via OpenUp.
  • Commuting, home-working, and internet allowances.

How to Apply

Interested candidates should submit their application through the university’s official recruitment portal. The application must include:

  • A Cover Letter explaining your motivation and qualifications.
  • A Curriculum Vitae (CV) including a list of publications and contact details for three references.
  • Transcripts of BSc and MSc studies.

Applications sent via email or post will not be processed.
