Overview
The Department of Ecology at Montana State University (MSU) is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Research Scholar position. This role is part of an NSF-funded project investigating speciation under alternating cycles of gene flow and isolation. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of PI Ethan Linck to lead the development of machine learning-based software for inferring evolutionary histories from genomic data.
| Designation | Postdoctoral Research Scholar |
| Location | Bozeman, Montana, USA |
| Salary | $55,000 – $60,000 annually |
| Duration | Anticipated for 2 years (Funding through 2028) |
| Department | Department of Ecology |
Research Area
The research focuses on the intersection of evolutionary genomics, population genetics, and machine learning. Key project themes include speciation theory, genomic data analysis, and the impact of sea-level changes on avian divergence in Melanesia.
Eligibility & Qualifications
Candidates must meet the following criteria to be considered for the position:
- Required: Ph.D. in Evolutionary Biology, Genetics, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or a closely related field by the start date.
- Required: Proven experience with scientific programming and computational data analysis.
- Required: Demonstrated research productivity through peer-reviewed publications, presentations, or dissertation research.
- Preferred: Knowledge of population genetics theory and simulation methods.
- Preferred: Experience with machine learning applications in genomics or contributing to open-source software.

This postdoctoral fellowship offers a unique opportunity to lead method development in evolutionary biology. Primary responsibilities include:
- Developing open-source, machine learning–based software for inferring evolutionary history.
- Designing and running population genetic simulations to generate training data and validate theoretical predictions.
- Collaborating with the PI and graduate students on empirical and theoretical speciation research.
- Preparing manuscripts for publication and presenting findings at national and international conferences.
How to Apply
Interested candidates should apply through the official Montana State University recruitment portal. As part of the application, please upload the following required documents:
- A comprehensive Curriculum Vitae (CV).
- A Cover Letter specifically addressing how you meet the required and preferred qualifications listed above.
