Postdoctoral Research Fellow – Animal: The University of Queensland is seeking two highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Fellows to join the School of Biological Sciences and Centre for Marine Science. This exciting opportunity involves conducting research on the interactions between a marine sponge and its maternally-inherited bacterial symbionts throughout the sponge’s life cycle. The positions are supported by Australian Research Council funding and will contribute to uncovering the mechanisms underlying the establishment and maintenance of animal-bacterial holobionts. The research will take place at the Marine Genomics Lab, led by Professors Sandie Degnan and Bernard Degnan, and will involve both bioinformatics and genomics as well as molecular, cell, and developmental biology. The positions are full-time, fixed-term appointments for up to 3 years.
Designation: Postdoctoral Research Fellow
Research Area: Biological sciences field
Location: St Lucia, Brisbane QLD, Australia (with fieldwork at Heron Island Research Station)
Eligibility/Qualification:
- PhD in a biological sciences field
- Substantial doctoral and/or postdoctoral experience in either bioinformatics or molecular, cell, and developmental biology
- Understanding of holobiont biology principles, including development, ecology, and evolution
- Ability to design and implement advanced bioinformatic analyses or experiments in molecular, cell, and developmental biology
- Track record of publishing in reputable international journals
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
Job Description:
As a Postdoctoral Research Fellow, you will work collaboratively with Chief Investigators and members of the Marine Genomics Lab to achieve the research goals of the ARC-funded projects. Your responsibilities will include contributing to the design, development, and implementation of research related to the regulatory interactions between the sponge and its symbionts in developmental, ecological, and environmental contexts. Depending on your specialization, you will take a leading role in either the bioinformatic analysis of multi-omic datasets or the molecular, cell, and developmental analysis of holobiont function. You will be expected to publish scientific papers, assist with animal collection at the field site, present research at conferences, and contribute to the supervision of research students. The positions offer an opportunity to develop cutting-edge scientific research skills and may involve fieldwork at UQ’s Heron Island Research Station.
