Postdoctoral Researcher in Biochemistry, University of Birmingham, UK

Postdoctoral Position in UK United Kingdom

Postdoctoral Researcher in Biochemistry: The University of Birmingham, UK, is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to join the Gibbs and Sanchez-Moran labs in the School of Biosciences. The position is part of the BBSRC-funded project “MEIAD: Investigating roles for meiosis associated degradation during meiotic recombination in plants.” The successful candidate will work on elucidating the role of the ubiquitin proteasome system in regulating crossover determination and homologous recombination during plant meiosis using genetic, molecular cytogenetic, and protein biochemistry approaches.

Job Description:

Postdoctoral Researcher in Plant Protein Biochemistry/Proteomics

The Postdoctoral Researcher will be part of a collaborative project aimed at investigating the interactions between recombination and proteasomal degradation during plant meiosis. The key objectives of the project include characterizing proteolytic components, identifying degradation targets, understanding spatiotemporal activities, and exploring the modulation of meiosis through genetic and pharmacological manipulation. This research will shed light on the critical process of genetic inheritance in plants, potentially benefiting agronomy by enhancing genetic variation in important crops.

Qualifications:

  • PhD in molecular plant biology and/or protein biochemistry.
  • Prior experience with protein analysis techniques such as Western blotting and immunoprecipitation.
  • Desirable skills include working with Arabidopsis, knowledge of post-translational protein modifications, and experience with mass-spec-based proteomics.
  • Strong written and communication skills, with the ability to publish research in high-quality journals.

Working Environment: The researcher will be part of the Plant Science & Food Security theme within the School of Biosciences at the University of Birmingham. The School hosts over 60 research groups focusing on various aspects of biological sciences. The candidate will also have opportunities to assist in the supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students.
