PhD student: Research Assistant : The Department of Ecology at the School of Biology/Chemistry invites applications for the position of Research Assistant (m/f/d) to work on an exciting DFG-funded project. Research Area: Eco-evolutionary causes and genomic consequences of synergistic coevolution
Location: School of Biology/Chemistry, Osnabrück University, Osnabrück, Germany
Eligibility/Qualification:
- Completed degree (M.Sc. or comparable) in biology or a related field.
- Solid practical experience in microbiological techniques and molecular biological methods.
- Excellent command of written and spoken English.
Additional Qualifications:
- Sound knowledge of ecological and evolutionary concepts and theory.
- Creative approach to work.
- Strong motivation and curiosity.
- Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team.
- Structured and independent work style.
- Experience in high-resolution fluorescence microscopy.
- Knowledge of quantitative methods and statistical analysis.
- Working knowledge of programming languages (e.g., Python) is a plus.
- Ability to develop and analyze theoretical models (population dynamics, individual-based models) is a plus.
Job Description: As a Research Assistant, you will play a crucial role in the DFG-funded project focused on understanding the eco-evolutionary causes and genomic consequences of synergistic coevolution. Your responsibilities will include:
- Conducting coculture and coevolution experiments with different bacterial strains.
- Reconstructing mutations in different genetic backgrounds.
- Performing growth experiments to analyze fitness consequences of mutations.
- Quantifying amino acid production rates using LC-MS/MS.
- Spatio-temporal analysis of bacterial aggregates using microfluidics and fluorescence microscopy.
- Flow cytometric analyses.
- Collaborating closely with Dr. Alexander Herbig (Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology) and Dr. Alexander Grünberger (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology).
