PhD Position in Dermal Oncoimmunology at HI-TRON Mainz, Germany

Postdoc in Germany

PhD Position in Dermal Oncoimmunology: The Helmholtz Institute for Translational Oncology (HI-TRON) Mainz invites applications for a PhD position in the Dermal Oncoimmunology Lab. The project explores how stromal-immune interactions shape skin diseases, focusing on cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) and their role in autoimmune-like states within tumors. This opportunity is part of the cooperation between HI-TRON, the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), TRON gGmbH, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU), and the University Medical Center Mainz.

Scholarship Description:

PhD Position in Dermal Oncoimmunology at HI-TRON Mainz

The project aims to uncover phenotypic and functional differences in mouse and human dermal fibroblasts in cancer (melanoma and squamous cell carcinoma) compared with autoimmune skin conditions. The candidate will investigate how distinct fibroblast subsets influence infiltrating myeloid cells in different disease contexts, focusing on extracellular matrix remodeling, secreted factors, and expression of immunomodulatory molecules. State-of-the-art techniques, including single-cell sequencing, spatial transcriptomics, spectral flow cytometry/FACS, and immunofluorescent imaging, will be utilized to understand the immune landscape of the tumor.

Eligibility: The candidate should hold a Master’s degree in a relevant discipline such as Biomedicine, Biotechnology, or Natural Science. Knowledge and experience in Immunology and associated functional assays are desired but not mandatory. Proficiency in both spoken and written English is mandatory. Good communication skills, organizational ability, and a creative mindset are essential for this multidisciplinary role.
