PhD Studentship – Plant Mobile Signals: Embark on a transformative research journey with the opportunity for a PhD Studentship on “Plant Mobile Signals for Long-Lasting Fruit Protection.” This project, under the primary supervision of Dr. Estrella Luna-Diez at the University of Birmingham and in collaboration with non-academic partner Dr. Emmanouil Domazakis from Enza Zaden, focuses on innovative strategies to enhance fruit resistance against postharvest diseases.
Summary Table: | Supervisor | Dr. Estrella Luna-Diez, University of Birmingham | | Non-academic Partner | Dr. Emmanouil Domazakis, Enza Zaden | | Project Title | Plant Mobile Signals for Long-Lasting Fruit Protection | | Study Area | Molecular Biology, Plant Sciences | | Duration | PhD Studentship | | Application Deadline | 04 January 2024 |
Study Area: The research delves into the molecular mechanisms of plant mobile signals, aiming to understand how these signals contribute to long-lasting fruit priming, particularly in Solanaceae crops. The focus is on developing integrated disease management strategies for postharvest diseases that are sustainable and environmentally friendly.
Scholarship Description:
PhD Studentship – Plant Mobile Signals for Long-Lasting Fruit Protection
This PhD project explores the enhancement of tomato fruit resistance through the priming of plant defense mechanisms using the broad-spectrum defense elicitor β-aminobutyric acid (BABA). The research aims to identify the triggers of priming, test the role and function of mobile signals, and assess the durability of the priming response. The expected outcome is a comprehensive analysis of durable resistance from a metabolite and epigenetic perspective.
