Job Summary
The Environmental Microbiology group at ETH Zurich, led by Prof. Marie Schölmerich, is offering a fully funded 4-year Doctoral Position. This role is part of the National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) Genesis, an interdisciplinary project exploring the emergence of life in the Universe. The successful candidate will investigate the physiology and bioenergetics of alkaliphilic methanogenic archaea to understand life’s emergence and biosignatures.
| Designation | Doctoral Student (PhD Position) |
| Research Area | Environmental Microbiology, Anaerobic Microbiology, Bioenergetics |
| Location | Zurich, Switzerland |
| Duration | Fixed-term, 4 years (100%) |
Research Area
The project focuses on the fascinating world of anaerobic microbiology. Specifically, it investigates how alkaliphilic methanogenic archaea thrive in extreme environments like soda lakes and serpentinising vents. These environments are candidate sites for the emergence of life on Earth and potential habitats on ocean worlds like Enceladus. The research aims to distinguish biological methane signatures from abiotic methane.
Job Description
The doctoral project involves the following responsibilities:
- Investigating the growth limits of alkaliphilic methanogens.
- Studying how these organisms conserve energy and acquire carbon at high pH levels.
- Identifying signatures that distinguish biological methane from abiotic methane.
- Combining anaerobic cultivation, physiology, and biochemistry techniques.
- Collaborating within the NCCR Genesis network, linking microbiology with geochemistry and planetary science.
Eligibility/Qualification
Candidates must meet the following requirements:
- MSc (or equivalent) in microbiology, environmental sciences, or a related field.
- Experience in anaerobic cultivation and/or protein biochemistry is a significant advantage.
- Curiosity about fundamental scientific questions and enthusiasm for experimental work.
- Excellent communication skills in English.
How to Apply
Interested candidates must submit their application exclusively through the ETH Zurich online application portal. Please include the following documents:
- Cover letter
- CV including a publication list
- Diploma and Transcript of Records
- Contact details of two references
