Research Area
The research focuses on carbon capture, fluidization, gas-solid fluidized beds, CO₂ adsorption, solids fluid dynamics, interphase mass transfer, and bed-to-exchanger heat transfer. The project will develop technology capable of operating flexibly using low-grade heat, vacuum, and heat pumps.
Research Responsibilities
- Design, build, and instrument a physical model of a fluidized-bed adsorption stage.
- Measure and study solids fluid dynamics.
- Investigate interphase mass transfer and bed-to-exchanger heat transfer.
- Develop closure expressions for mass- and heat-transfer models.
- Develop scientific concepts and communicate research findings verbally and in writing.
- Prepare scientific publications and project reports.
- Complete advanced courses through the Graduate School of Energy, Environment and Systems.
- Teach undergraduate students or undertake other departmental duties for up to 20% of working hours.
Location
The position is based at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden. Doctoral studies require physical presence throughout the entire study period. International applicants must present a valid residence permit by the agreed starting date.
Eligibility and Qualifications
Mandatory Requirements
- A 120-credit master’s degree or a 60-credit Swedish magister degree in a relevant field.
- Applicants educated outside Sweden may qualify with a four-year bachelor’s degree.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.

- Curiosity, collaboration skills, clear communication, and an interest in rigorous research and professional development.

Scholarship Description
The doctoral student will join the FlexCSAR EU project, which aims to develop flexible adsorption-based technology for capturing CO₂ from flue gases. In contrast to conventional liquid-solvent methods and fixed-bed adsorption, the project investigates a gas-solid fluidized-bed system. Flexible use of low-grade heat, vacuum, and heat pumps is intended to optimize operation according to the availability and cost of electricity and heat.
The position is fully funded, and the doctoral student will be employed by Chalmers University of Technology with access to employee benefits.
