Joint Hires for Postdoctoral and PhD: Join our interdisciplinary and collaborative team in a cutting-edge research project exploring the proximate factors mediating helping behavior in pigs. The project, titled “Let me out! Proximate factors mediating helping behavior in pigs,” aims to investigate the motivations underlying helping behavior in pigs using a novel group-testing paradigm. You can work with top research groups in animal behavior and welfare at the Institute of Behavioural Physiology, Research Institute for Farm Animal Biology (FBN) in Germany, and the Institute of Animal Welfare Science, University of Veterinary Medicine in Austria.We are currently recruiting two postdoctoral researchers and one PhD student to join our team.

Research Area: Proximate factors mediating helping behavior in pigs

Location: Institute of Behavioural Physiology, Research Institute for Farm Animal Biology (FBN), Dummerstorf, Germany and Institute of Animal Welfare Science, University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna, Austria

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Degree in biology, psychology, animal/veterinary science, or a related field
  • Experience conducting animal behavior research
  • Interest in conducting research on pigs
  • Strong collaborative and interdisciplinary mindset

Job Description: As a Postdoctoral Researcher or PhD Student, your responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting research on the proximate factors mediating helping behavior in pigs
  • Utilizing the novel group-testing paradigm to test competing hypotheses
  • Analyzing data and interpreting results
  • Collaborating with international research teams and sharing datasets
  • Investigating the role of personality traits, social relationships, behavioral and acoustic signals, and physiological influences on helping behavior
  • Contributing to the development of scientific publications and presenting research findings at conferences
