Research Area

The researcher will work within the Machine Intelligence Group in the Center for Applied Scientific Computing (CASC) Division. Key focus areas include:

  • AI Safety & Security
  • Foundation Models in material science and bio assurance
  • Uncertainty quantification for deep learning models
  • Multi-modal sequence-to-sequence models for chemical reactions/molecules

Eligibility/Qualification

  • Education: Recent Ph.D. in Machine Learning, Optimization, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Proficiency in modern software libraries (PyTorch, TensorFlow) for medium to large-scale deep learning models.
    • Experience with scientific programming in the Python ecosystem.
    • Expertise in one or more areas: large language models, graph neural networks, multimodal models, generative models, robustness, or explainable AI.
  • Research Record: Demonstrated productivity documented by publications, reports, or open-source software in top-tier venues (e.g., NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, CVPR, Nature).
  • Clearance/Access: Must be eligible to access the Laboratory in compliance with Section 3112 of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).

Job Description

  • Research, design, implement, and apply advanced machine learning methods across multiple scientific applications.
  • Collaborate with scientists and engineers to define, plan, and execute experimental and modeling efforts for national security applications.
  • Propose advanced analysis methodologies, analyze data, and document findings in technical reports and peer-reviewed journals.
  • Contribute to multidisciplinary grant proposals alongside academic and industrial partners.
  • Pursue independent, complementary research interests and engage with scientists internally and externally.
