Ph.D. Graduate Assistantship: The University of Vermont, Department of Plant and Soil Sciences, invites applications for a Ph.D. Graduate Assistantship to commence on September 1, 2024. Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in entomology, biology, animal behavior, ecology, chemical ecology, or related field.
  • Must meet the requirements of the Graduate College at the University of Vermont.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Previous experience in implementing and managing field projects.
  • Comfortable working closely with research collaborators and vegetable growers.
  • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs.
  • Possession of a valid U.S. driver’s license by the start date.

Job Description:

Ph.D. Graduate Assistantship – Applied Chemical Ecology for Managing the Invasive Swede Midge

The Ph.D. student will:

  1. Compare pheromone dispenser types to determine efficacy and affordability.
  2. Investigate how weather conditions affect dispenser capture efficacy.
  3. Determine how to deploy pheromone mating disruption within an annual cropping system.
  4. Develop tools for educating growers nationally about the invasive swede midge.
