Ph.D. Position on Oxygen-Depleted Waters: The Department of Biology at the University of Southern Denmark invites applications for a Ph.D. position focused on the interactions between benthic and pelagic ecosystems in oxygen-depleted waters. This three-year position is part of the ERC Synergy project RECLESS, which examines the impacts of ocean deoxygenation on microbial nitrogen transformations.
Designation
Ph.D. Fellowship in Aquatic Biogeochemistry and Microbial Ecology
| Attribute | Details |

Research Area
The project focuses on understanding how benthic processes influence the exchange of materials between sediments and the water column in coastal waters with low oxygen levels, ultimately impacting pelagic nitrogen cycling.
Location
University of Southern Denmark
Campusvej 55, Odense M, 5230, Denmark
Eligibility/Qualification
- A master’s degree (equivalent to a Danish masterโs degree) obtained by the enrollment/employment date.
- Background in experimental (bio-)geochemistry, microbial ecology, or related fields.
- Experience in fieldwork and knowledge of biogeochemical sediment analyses are desirable.
Description
The selected candidate will:
- Explore and quantify benthic processes affecting nutrient exchange in oxygen-depleted coastal environments.
- Conduct biogeochemical sediment analyses, measure benthic exchange rates, and engage in experimental studies of microbial processes.
- Collaborate with researchers from various institutions involved in the RECLESS project and participate in international research cruises.
How to Apply
Interested candidates should submit the following documents:
- A declaration of interest (motivation letter) detailing qualifications and interest in the project (maximum two pages).
- A detailed CV, including personal contact information.
- Copies of diplomas (Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees) and transcripts.
- Contact details of at least two referees.
- A full list of relevant publications.
