PhD Fellowship in Organic Aerosol, Aarhus University, Denmark

Postdoc Position in Denmark, Aarhus University Denmark

PhD Fellowship in Organic Aerosol: Aarhus University invites applications for a PhD fellowship within the Chemistry programme at the Graduate School of Natural Sciences. This position focuses on understanding the behavior of atmospheric organic aerosol particles and their impact on cloud formation, beginning August 2025 or later.

Title:
PhD Fellowship: Atmospheric Organic Aerosol Particles and Clouds – Probing How Aerosol Phase Behavior Affects Cloud Formation

PhD Fellowship in Atmospheric Organic Aerosol Particles and Clouds

Designation:
PhD Fellow

Research Area:
Atmospheric Chemistry, Aerosol Science, Cloud Microphysics

Location:
Aarhus University, Department of Chemistry, Langelandsgade 140, 8000 Aarhus C, Denmark

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Completed Master’s degree or a Bachelor’s degree plus one year of Master’s studies in Chemistry, Physics, Atmospheric Science, Nanoscience, Engineering, or similar fields.
  • Excellent academic results with strong commitment to a collaborative research environment.
  • Prior experience with aerosol instrumentation and knowledge in aerosol and atmospheric science is advantageous.
  • Good collaboration skills and the ability to work independently.

Job Description:
The PhD project aims to explore the phase behavior of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) particles and assess how these properties affect cloud formation. The successful candidate will generate different SOA types in the atmospheric simulation chamber (AURA) and utilize advanced microscopy-based techniques and instrumentation to study their phase behavior and cloud-forming capabilities. The project will operate under the supervision of Asst. Prof. Fabian Mahrt and Prof. Merete Bilde within the Aerosol and Cloud Microphysics group at the Center for Chemistry of Clouds (C3).

How to Apply:
Interested candidates should carefully read the application guidelines and prepare their application as follows:

  1. Prepare a project description (copy and paste the project description in PDF format).
  2. Apply through the online system available at Aarhus University PhD Application starting from 1 March 2025.
  3. Select the May 2025 Call with a deadline for submission by 1 May 2025 at 23:59 CEST.
  4. Choose the programme “Chemistry” and select “Atmospheric organic aerosol particles and clouds: probing how aerosol phase behavior-affects cloud formation (Aoapcp)”.

Last Date to Apply:
1 May 2025, 23:59 CEST

Applicants are encouraged to contact Asst. Prof. Fabian Mahrt or Prof. Merete Bilde for any inquiries before applying. Aarhus University welcomes applicants from diverse backgrounds and strives to create an inclusive environment for all.
