Eligibility/Qualification:

  • You hold a masterโ€™s degree in biotechnology, bioengineering sciences, materials science, architectural engineering, chemical engineering, or a related field.
  • You have a proven interdisciplinary profile or strong interdisciplinary interest.
  • You possess practical laboratory skills, a precise experimental working attitude, and basic knowledge of or experience with microbiological techniques and fungal/bacterial cultivation.
  • Asset: Experience with mycelium-based composites, microbially induced calcite precipitation, SEM-EDX, FTIR, microscopy, mechanical testing, statistical analysis, 3D printing, mould development, and prototyping.
  • You must not have performed work as a paid assistant (from operating resources) for a cumulated period of more than 12 months.

Job Description:

You will work within an interdisciplinary VUB research team to develop protocols for the growth and bio-cementation of mycelium-based composites. The central hypothesis is that microbial mineralization can form calcium-based crystals in or on the mycelium network, increasing the material’s strength and stiffness. The role involves microbiological experimentation, material production, chemical/microscopic characterization, and mechanical testing. You will also contribute to limited teaching activities within the Architectural Engineering department (e.g., guiding students in exercise sessions or practicals).
