Summary

This project, embedded within the HyCarb consortium, investigates how variations in feedstock composition (CO/CO₂/H₂ ratios) and contaminants affect catalytic activity, selectivity, and stability. You will combine advanced kinetic studies with state-of-the-art operando characterization techniques to develop fundamental insights for better catalyst and process design.

Job Description

As a PhD candidate, you will:

  • Conduct Kinetic Studies: Analyze the impact of varying CO/CO₂/H₂ ratios and contaminants on catalytic performance and stability under transient conditions.
  • Monitor Catalyst Behavior: Apply bulk operando and quasi-in situ techniques to track structural changes and active phase evolution.
  • Link Chemistry to Performance: Utilize surface-sensitive methods (such as near-ambient pressure XPS, DRIFTS, and SSITKA-DRIFTS-MS) to identify surface intermediates.
  • Develop Workflows: Create methodologies for sampling and analyzing catalysts from long-term operations without air exposure.
  • Collaborate: Work closely with both academic and industrial partners to align research with real-world objectives.

Eligibility/Qualification

  • Master’s degree in chemical engineering, chemistry, or a related field.
  • Strong interest in heterogeneous catalysis and reaction engineering.
  • Experience with catalyst synthesis, characterization, or kinetic measurements is advantageous.
  • Ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary team.
  • Fluent in English (C1 level).
