Eligibility & Qualifications
1. General Admission Requirements
- A second-cycle (Master’s level) qualification, or
- Completion of course requirements comprising at least 240 ECTS credits (with at least 60 credits at the second/advanced cycle), or
- Substantially equivalent qualifications/knowledge acquired in Sweden or abroad.
2. Specific Admission Requirements
- At least 15 higher education credits in Organic Chemistry (with at least 7.5 credits at the advanced level), and an independent degree project (Master’s thesis) of at least 30 credits at the advanced level in the subject area, or
- A Master of Science in Engineering (Civilingenjörsexamen) in Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, Environmental Engineering, or Engineering Nanoscience.
3. Additional & Preferred Requirements
- High proficiency in written and spoken English.
- Strong background in intermediate and advanced organic synthesis.
- Hands-on proficiency in structural determination using 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy.
- Ability to work independently, formulate research problems, and collaborate within a team.
- Valued qualification: Practical laboratory or chemistry work experience outside of a Master’s degree.
Scholarship / Employment Description
- Dual Status: In Sweden, PhD candidates are formally employed by the university with full social security benefits, paid annual leave, and an occupational pension.
- Duration: 4 years of full-time research and doctoral education. If teaching or departmental duties are undertaken (up to 20%), the contract duration is extended accordingly.
- Core Responsibilities:
- Performing organic synthesis, reaction optimization, and molecular design.
- Structural characterization and purification using state-of-the-art facilities (NMR, LCMS, Mass Spectrometry, nCHREM).
- Data analysis, documentation, and manuscript preparation for scientific publication.
- Attending advanced coursework, research group meetings, seminars, and international conferences.
