PhD Position for Developing Multi-Physics Models at ETH Zurich, Switzerland

Postdoc Position at University of Zurich Switzerland

Title: PhD Position: Developing Multi-Physics Models of Planar Inductors and the design and performance of highly compact, low-profile power electronic systems used in applications like DC-DC converters for data centers, automotive systems, and wireless charging. The research will involve comprehensive modeling of high-frequency losses, parasitic capacitances, temperature distribution, and electrical insulation, leading to the optimization of core and winding geometries and cooling concepts. The developed models will be integrated into system-level optimization procedures and will be part of a wider modeling framework at the Laboratory for High Power Electronic Systems (HPE) at ETH Zurich.

Designation: PhD Candidate

Research Area:

  • Multi-physics modeling of planar magnetic devices (inductors and transformers)
  • High-frequency losses in windings
  • Parasitic capacitances in windings
  • Thermal management in magnetic components
  • Electrical insulation design for windings
  • Optimization of core and winding geometry
  • Advanced cooling concepts for planar magnetics
  • Integration of component models into power electronic converter systems

Location:
Zurich, Switzerland

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Diploma/M.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering with excellent grades.
  • Fundamental knowledge of power electronic converter systems.
  • Interest in detailed modeling and design of magnetic components.
  • Interest in the optimization of power electronic systems.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Fluency in English.
  • Willingness to fully commit as part of an international team.

Job Description:
The successful candidate will:

  • Develop multi-physics models for planar inductors and transformers to comprehensively describe their behavior, including HF losses, parasitic capacitances, and thermal distribution.
  • Develop models for designing electrical insulation of windings.
  • Optimize core and winding geometry based on the developed models.
  • Develop advanced cooling concepts for windings and core.
  • Identify technological barriers to power density in planar magnetics.
  • Integrate developed models into optimization procedures for power electronic converter systems in a computationally efficient manner.
  • Collaborate with other PhD candidates on various modeling aspects within a wider framework.
  • Design and build prototypes, including power electronic converter systems, to verify new cooling and winding concepts and developed models under realistic operating conditions.

How to Apply:
Applications must be submitted exclusively through the online application portal of ETH Zurich. The application should include:

  • Comprehensive CV
  • B.S. and M.Sc. transcripts
  • Electronic copies of B.Sc/M.Sc. thesis and/or publications (if available)
  • Names and addresses of references (to be sent via email to J. Biela at jbiela@ethz.ch).
