Eligibility/Qualification
To be considered for this position, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Education: Master’s degree (MSc) in natural sciences, ideally in marine biology, fisheries biology, biological oceanography, or marine environmental sciences. (Candidates with backgrounds in marine technology or computer science and relevant biological experience are also welcome to apply).
- Credit Equivalency: The course of study must correspond to a 5-year Norwegian program (120 ECTS at the master’s level). The degree must be obtained no later than September 2026.
- Academic Record: An average grade of B or better on NTNU’s grading scale (or equivalent academic foundation).
- Language Skills: Fluent communication in English, both written and spoken.
- Preferred Qualifications: Documented experience with AI/object detection in biology, knowledge of a Scandinavian language, driving license (Class B or BE), Norwegian boat driving license, and prior fieldwork experience at sea.
Job Description
The successful candidate will collaborate closely with experts in marine biology, ocean engineering, robotics, and data science. Key duties include:
- Completing the doctoral training program to successfully obtain a PhD degree.
- Developing and implementing field water sampling and analysis systems for AI-based plankton and particle imaging.
- Conducting extensive fieldwork and sampling campaigns to monitor coastal cod spawning dynamics (fish eggs, zooplankton distribution, and water quality).
- Publishing high-quality academic research and engaging in popular science dissemination.
- Participating actively in international academic activities, such as conferences and research stays abroad.
