PhD Position in Biological Physics, Göttingen, Germany

PhD in Germany, International Max Planck Research School

PhD Position in Biological Physics: The Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization in Göttingen, Germany, offers a Ph.D. position in Biological Physics within the independent research group “Theory of Biological Fluids” led by Dr. David Zwicker. The position focuses on understanding the organization principles of liquid-like droplets in biological cells and broader questions in biological physics.

Location: Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization, Göttingen, Germany

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Master’s degree (or comparable) in physics, applied mathematics, or related disciplines from a recognized university
  • Interest in biological physics, soft matter, statistical physics, and complex systems (previous experience not required)
  • Strong quantitative skills (data analysis and programming)
  • Eagerness to learn new skills and apply established ones
  • Good command of the English language

Description: The Ph.D. candidate will engage in research projects focusing on theoretical biophysics, particularly in understanding the organization principles of liquid-like droplets in biological cells. The research combines analytical insight from simple systems with numerical simulations to unveil biological design principles. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to shape their own research direction within the group.

Offer:

  • Excellent working conditions in a highly international and interdisciplinary research environment
  • Salary and working hours follow the funding guidelines of the Max Planck Society for junior scientists
  • Structured Ph.D. program offered in collaboration with the Physics Department at the Georg August University in Göttingen
  • Initial three-year Ph.D. position with flexible starting date

How to Apply: Interested candidates should apply online and submit a cover letter, CV, and contacts of two referees. The cover letter should briefly describe research interests, motivations, and reasons for joining the group. Applications received before May 1, 2024, will be given full consideration.
