Scholarship & Position Description
In medical life-support systems such as ventilators and multi-infusion equipment, accurately controlling fluid and gas flows is critical. While MEMS-based flow sensors offer outstanding performance, current packaging methods rely on elastomer seals or adhesives that risk releasing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into breathing gas pathways or reacting chemically with potent liquid pharmaceuticals (e.g., insulin, dopamine, noradrenaline, morphine).
The goal of this project is to develop a novel, reliable "glueless" and elastomer-free hermetic packaging technique for silicon chips featuring embedded microfluidic channels with low-stress silicon-rich silicon nitride walls. The candidate will design and evaluate seals capable of withstanding pressures up to 30 bar across temperatures from -20°C to 70°C using purely inert materials.
Key Research Objectives & Tasks:
- Investigate fundamental bonding techniques between glass/metals and silicon nitride coated silicon wafers.
- Design, fabricate, and package actual sensor chips inside the state-of-the-art MESA+ NanoLab cleanroom.
- Perform experimental bonding analyses and comprehensive characterization in the MEMS measurement laboratory.
- Engage in educational and teaching support activities (up to 20% of the total time).

Eligibility and Qualifications

- An MSc degree in Electrical Engineering, Nanotechnology, Applied Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or a closely related discipline.
- Strong theoretical foundations and proven experimental/laboratory skills.
- Demonstrated affinity for microfabrication, cleanroom processing, electronics, MEMS, or sensor technologies.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills suitable for an interdisciplinary, international research environment.
- Fluency in spoken and written English.
