PhD position– Mechanobiology: The Bastounis lab in the Interfaculty Institute of Microbiology & Infection Medicine, part of the Cluster of Excellence “Controlling Microbes to Fight Infections” (CMFI EXC 2124) at the University of Tübingen, is seeking a highly motivated candidate to fill a PhD position as part of a recently funded DFG project. The position, funded for three years, will focus on investigating the mechanobiological processes involved in vascular endothelial cell infection by the food-borne facultative intracellular bacterial pathogen Listeria monocytogenes.

Eligibility/Qualification:
- Interdisciplinary background in both life and engineering sciences
- Solid background in basic computer programming (e.g., MATLAB, Python) and/or image processing
- Degree demonstrating proficiency in host-pathogen interactions, cell biology, microscopy (preferred)
- Highly motivated candidate with excellent communication and initiative skills
Job Description: The PhD candidate will use a multi-well impinging flow jet to investigate how shear stresses and alterations in the stiffness of the extracellular matrix impact the adhesion, uptake, and spread of Listeria monocytogenes within endothelial cells. The project aims to discover how shear flows influence host cell mechanotransduction, tension, and the dissemination of intracellular bacterial pathogens through endothelia. The candidate will work in a stimulating environment with state-of-the-art infrastructure, collaborating with scientists in microbiology, microscopy, cell biology, and biomechanics.
