PhD Position – Plant Function to Root Dynamics at Forschungszentrum Jülich, Germany

Postdoc in Germany

Forschungszentrum Jülich is inviting applications for a PhD position at the Institute of Bio- and Geosciences – Plant Sciences (IBG-2). This doctoral research project aims to investigate the relationship between above-ground plant traits and root system dynamics using advanced phenotyping and imaging technologies within the interdisciplinary PhenoRob research environment.

Application DeadlineOpen until filled

Research Area

The research focuses on Plant Sciences, specifically linking plant physiology, root biology, phenotyping, sensing, imaging (MRI and PET), data analysis, and plant modeling to understand how carbon assimilation relates to root and shoot growth.

Location

Jülich, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.

Eligibility/Qualification

Interested candidates should meet the following criteria:

  • Education: An excellent Master’s degree in plant sciences, biology, agricultural sciences, crop science, environmental sciences, bioengineering, or a related discipline.
  • Language Skills: Very good command of written and spoken English (at least B2 level).
  • Technical Skills: Experience in quantitative data analysis and statistics. Proficiency with R, Python, or comparable tools is highly advantageous.
  • Motivation: Strong interest in combining controlled laboratory experiments with field-based research and linking physiological processes with imaging/sensor data.
  • Preferred Experience: Knowledge of photosynthesis measurements, root phenotyping, plant imaging (MRI, PET), remote sensing, machine learning, or plant modeling is beneficial but not mandatory.

Scholarship Description

The successful candidate will work on a project titled “Linking Above-Ground Plant Function to Root Dynamics.” The primary goal is to determine if measurable above-ground changes can serve as predictors for dynamic processes in the hidden root system. Responsibilities include:

  • Designing and conducting plant experiments under both controlled and field conditions.
  • Quantifying temporal changes in plant structure and function using non-invasive approaches.
  • Investigating relationships between photosynthetic carbon assimilation, carbon allocation, and root/shoot growth.
  • Developing quantitative approaches to relate root development and stress responses to above-ground measurements.
  • Contributing experimental data to the parameterization and validation of functional-structural plant models.
  • Presenting results at international conferences and publishing in peer-reviewed journals.

Benefits: The position offers a 30-day annual leave, flexible working hours, access to world-class research infrastructure, structured doctoral training (JuDocS), and support for international employees.

How to Apply

Applications must be submitted through the Forschungszentrum Jülich online recruitment portal. Candidates should prepare their academic transcripts, CV, and a letter of motivation highlighting their interest in the project.

Last Date for Apply

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Applicants are encouraged to apply as soon as possible for the next available start date.
