Project / Job Description
As the UK targets Net-Zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, hydrogen and green energy carriers play a pivotal role. Ammonia (NH3) is emerging as a premier hydrogen carrier and zero-carbon fuel due to its high volumetric energy density, liquid storability at ambient temperatures, and established global distribution infrastructure.
This PhD research project aims to develop a direct ammonia solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology that can efficiently convert ammonia into carbon-free energy. Key research responsibilities and learning opportunities include:
- Investigating and formulating novel electro-catalyst design strategies for the direct electro-oxidation of ammonia.
- Evaluating fuel cell performance in terms of energy conversion efficiency and near-zero NOx emissions.
- Gaining expertise in catalyst synthesis, characterisation, electrochemical reaction engineering, and high-temperature fuel cell testing.
- Collaborating within Cranfield’s £69 million Hydrogen Integration Incubator Hub and engaging with leading industrial partners.
- Participating in Cranfield’s Doctoral Researchers’ Core Development (DRCD) programme for professional, project management, and entrepreneurial skill building.

Eligibility & Qualifications
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Academic Background: A first-class or upper second-class (2:1) UK honours degree or international equivalent in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Catalysis, Materials Science, Energy Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
- Experience: Relevant research or industrial experience is strongly welcomed and advantageous.
- Nationality: Open to UK, EU, and international applicants. (Note: Funding covers home fee rates; international candidates must be able to cover the difference between home and international tuition fees unless additional funding is secured.)
