2 PhD Positions in 4D Evolution, University of Bern, Switzerland

PhD Fellowship IN Switzerland

PhD Positions in 4D Evolution: The Institute of Geological Sciences at the University of Bern, Switzerland, is offering two fully funded PhD positions as part of the swisstopo project ‘3D Alps’. These positions will focus on the 3D modeling of the Helvetic sediment nappes and underlying basement units, aiming to reconstruct the paleogeography of the European passive continental margin prior to collision tectonics.

2 PhD Positions in 4D Evolution of the Swiss N-Alps

Summary Table:

  • Position: PhD Positions (2)
  • Location: University of Bern, Switzerland
  • Percentage: 100%
  • Start Date: January 1st, 2024 (Flexible)
  • Duration: Up to 4 years
  • Funding: Fully funded
  • Application Deadline: April 15th, 2024

Study Area:
The research will focus on the 4D evolution of the Swiss N-Alps, specifically the 3D modeling of the Helvetic sediment nappes and underlying basement units.

Scholarship Description:
The PhD candidates will be involved in creating a comprehensive 3D model of the Central Alps, emphasizing the Helvetic sediment nappes and basement units. The project aims to reconstruct the paleogeography of the European passive continental margin before collision tectonics, utilizing field investigations, data compilation, 2D GIS, and 3D computer modeling. Candidates may also explore additional research directions such as U-Pb dating, Raman thermometry, or clumped isotope studies. Close collaboration with swisstopo and other research teams is integral to the project.

Eligibility:
Applicants should hold an MSc in Earth Sciences or equivalent and demonstrate a keen interest in Alpine Geology. Proficiency in Structural Geology/Tectonics research, along with the ability to conduct fieldwork in mountainous terrains, is desired. Knowledge of German literature is advantageous. Strong communication skills and the ability to work in a team are essential.

Required Documents:

  1. Cover letter stating research interests and motivation for the PhD project
  2. Curriculum vitae (CV)
  3. Transcripts of academic degrees
  4. Abstract of the MSc thesis
  5. Names and addresses of two references

How to Apply:
Interested candidates should email their application as a single PDF file to Prof. Marco Herwegh at marco.herwegh@unibe.ch. For inquiries, contact Prof. Marco Herwegh via email.

Last Date:
The deadline for submission of applications is April 15th, 2024.
