PhD/Postdoc Position in Molecular Adaptations: The Institute of Biology II at the University of Freiburg is offering a PhD (65% E13 TVL) or Postdoc (100% E13 TVL) position as part of the DFG-funded Priority Programme SPP 2237 “MAdLand: Molecular Adaptations to Land.” The position is set to commence on April 1, 2024, or by mutual agreement, with an initial duration of 36 months and the possibility of extension. This opportunity focuses on experimental investigations into the evolutionary aspects of phytochrome signalling in non-seed plant model species.
Summary Table:
Position Type | Institute | Funding | Start Date | Duration |
---|---|---|---|---|
PhD/Postdoc | University of Freiburg | DFG-funded SPP 2237 | April 1, 2024 | 36 months (extendable) |
Study Area: The project, within the Priority Programme SPP 2237 “MAdLand,” aims to understand the diversification of phytochromes in response to changes in light conditions during the water-to-land transition. The study will investigate red and far-red light-specific photoreceptors, exploring the molecular mechanisms underlying their diversification. Model species such as Physcomitrium patens, Ceratopteris richardii, and Marchantia polymorpha will be employed.
Scholarship Description:
PhD/Postdoc Position in Molecular Adaptations to Land: Phytochrome Signalling
The selected candidate will conduct research in the lab of Andreas Hahn Inner at the Institute of Biology II, collaborating with other groups within the Priority Programme. The project involves molecular biology, genetic and bioinformatic approaches, and the use of model species to generate and characterize phytochrome mutant lines. Cross-species complementation analyses and protein-protein interaction studies will be conducted to identify factors determining wavelength-specificity. Bioinformatic methods will explore phytochrome diversity across land plants and related streptophyte algae.
Eligibility: Applicants must hold an MSc degree (for PhD applicants) or a PhD degree (for postdoc applicants) in plant biology or a related field. Proficient English skills, motivation to work in an international and competitive environment, and experience in bioinformatics and/or working with the mentioned model species are advantageous.
Required Documents: Interested candidates should submit the following documents via email as one PDF file:
- Letter of Motivation (max. 1 page)
- CV with a list of publications and names/contact details of two referees
- MSc (for PhD applicants) or PhD certificate (for postdoc applicants)
How to Apply: Send your application as an email with one PDF file to Andreas Hahn Inner at andreas.hahninner@biologie.uni-freiburg.de.
Last Date: The application deadline is 31 January 2024; interviews will begin on February 10, 2024, and continue until the position is filled.
