PhD Research Fellow – Climate: The University of Bergen, in collaboration with the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research (BCCR), is inviting applications for a PhD Research Fellow position in the field of regional climate modeling using machine learning. The position, associated with the EU Horizon Europe project “Impetus for Change (I4C),” focuses on improving climate predictions at local to regional scales and is affiliated with the World Climate Research Program’s Coordinated Regional Downscaling Experiments (CORDEX).

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in atmospheric sciences, statistics, computer science, applied mathematics, or related disciplines.
  • Experience in atmospheric physics, climate dynamics, and statistical modeling.
  • Proficient in scientific programming using Python, R, Matlab, Julia, C/C++, or similar.
  • Advantageous to have experience with machine learning, climate models (regional or global), and climate data analysis.
  • Ability to work independently, collaboratively, and demonstrate good English skills (written and oral).

Job Description: The PhD Research Fellow will focus on developing computationally efficient emulators of high-resolution regional climate models using machine learning. This involves improving the quality and transferability of emulators across different global climate models and time scales, testing existing emulators for tropical conditions, and disseminating research findings to the scientific community and the public. Collaboration with other project members and international partners will be essential.
