Summary

The fellowship focuses on providing a fundamental understanding of the physical processes that arise when droplets interact with soft fibers of complex geometry. Key focus areas include droplet wetting on fibrous structures and the coupling between active surface properties and external driving forces. The research involves designing new experiments, developing theoretical/numerical frameworks, and building bio-inspired, sustainable surfaces for applications like water harvesting from atmospheric fog.

Job Description

The successful PhD candidate will be expected to:

  • Develop experiments focusing on droplet flow and wetting on twisted fibers and soft materials.
  • Integrate experimental findings with theoretical predictions.
  • Advance the fundamental understanding of flow physics through theoretical and/or numerical work.
  • Work independently while collaborating within an interdisciplinary team specializing in mechanics, complex fluids, physics, biophysics, and sustainability.
  • Follow the department’s PhD program, which includes a mandatory educational component.

Eligibility & Qualification Requirements

Required Academic Background

  • A Masterโ€™s degree (or equivalent foreign degree corresponding to a minimum of 4 years in the Norwegian educational system) in mechanics, fluid mechanics, physics, or applied mathematics.
  • A strong theoretical background in mathematics, continuum mechanics, and fluid mechanics.
  • Academic excellence, typically placing the candidate in the upper segment of their graduating class.

Grade Requirements (Norwegian Scale)

  • Bachelor’s Degree Courses: Average grade of C or better.
  • Master’s Degree Courses: Average grade of B or better.
  • Master’s Thesis: Grade of B or better.

Core Skills

  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Good social and collaboration skills alongside the ability to work independently in a structured manner.
  • Desired: Previous involvement in fluid mechanics or droplet research projects, as well as programming or experimental laboratory experience.
