Study Area: The research will delve into understanding genetic changes at the DNA level in New Zealand short-horned grasshoppers, specifically exploring the role of cis- and trans-acting regulatory elements.

Scholarship Description: The successful candidate will conduct mating experiments, lab work, and bioinformatic analyses to advance our comprehension of gene-expression evolution. Fieldwork, hybrid grasshopper rearing, and RNA extraction for cutting-edge long-range Nanopore sequencing will be integral components of this dynamic project. An enriching experience awaits at Uppsala University under the guidance of Professor Niclas Backström.

Eligibility: Candidates should possess a BSc(Hons), master’s degree, or equivalent, with a keen interest in evolution and genetics. A background in genetics or biological sciences is ideal. Strong organizational skills, knowledge of Bioinformatics and R, lab work experience, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively are advantageous.

Required Documents: Applicants must submit a cover letter outlining their interests and background, a CV, and the names of at least three referees.

How to Apply: To apply, email the required documents to ludovic.dutoit@otago.ac.nz. Enquiries and questions before applying are encouraged.

Last Date: Applications will close on 15 December 2023.
