Job Description:

PhD Scholarship: Developing a Drug Screening Platform for Gregarines Infecting Shrimps

The project, titled “Developing a drug screening platform for gregarines infecting shrimps,” will be based at the School of Biosciences at the University of Kent. Led by Dr. Anastasios Tsaousis, the project involves collaboration with Skretting in Norway and Prof. Sonja Rueckert (University of Duisburg-Essen). Shrimp farming faces challenges from diseases caused by viruses and microbial eukaryotes like gregarines. The project aims to develop a drug screening platform for gregarines infecting shrimp by creating invertebrate cell cultures from various gut areas. The student will use an in-house automated microscopy system to monitor gregarine development and propagation under controlled atmospheric conditions. After system development, the student will screen various compounds and visualize their effects on gregarine propagation and interactions with hosts.

How to Apply: Interested candidates should apply for entry to the Microbiology PhD program at Canterbury. The project title should be entered as the proposed area of research, and Dr. Anastasios Tsaousis should be listed as the supervisor. The application should include a CV, references, qualification documents, and an outline of reasons for choosing this project.

Applications must be submitted by 15 February 2024. The interview date is to be confirmed, and the start date is May 2024.
