- NeuroAI
- Neural-Population Mechanisms underlying High-Level Cognitive Functions
Location
Kavli Institute for Systems Neuroscience, NTNU, Trondheim, Norway
Eligibility/Qualification
Required Selection Criteria
- Master’s degree in mathematics, physics, neuroscience, or computer science. The education must correspond to a five-year Norwegian degree program with 120 credits at master’s level. Master students can apply, but the degree must be obtained and documented before starting.
- Undergraduate degree in Physics or Mathematics.

Preferred Selection Criteria
- Experience with computational modelling.
- Experience with mathematical modelling.
- Experience with analyses of large neuronal populations.
- Familiarity with neuroscience.
- Prior work in the field of computational neuroscience.
- Prior productivity (e.g., publications, abstracts, conference proceedings, or codes).
Scholarship Description
This is a 3-year PhD position at the Kavli Institute for Systems Neuroscience, a Centre of Excellence at NTNU. The institute is dedicated to identifying neural-population mechanisms underlying high-level cognitive functions. The PhD candidate will contribute to developing mathematical and computational models, informed by experimental data, to understand heterogeneous representations in the brain. The role includes presenting results at international conferences, attending relevant courses, and contributing to the scientific environment of the lab and institute. Admission to the PhD program in neuroscience at NTNU is a prerequisite within three months of employment. The gross salary is normally NOK 580,000 per annum, with a 2% statutory contribution to the State Pension Fund deducted.
How to Apply
Applications must be submitted electronically via Jobbnorge.no. The application must clearly demonstrate how skills and experience meet the outlined criteria. Attachments must be in Norwegian/a Scandinavian language or English.
Required Application Documents
- Transcripts and diplomas for Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees.
- CV.
- Copy of Master’s thesis (or a draft if recently submitted).
- Short project outline (max 200 words/1 page) containing proposals for research questions, theoretical perspectives, methodological design, and progress plan.
- Short letter of motivation (400 words/1 page).
- Possibly publications or other relevant research work.
- Possibly certificates.
- Names and contact information of two relevant referees.
If education was taken abroad, attach documentation of the scope and quality of the entire education (Bachelor’s and Master’s), including a diploma supplement if available. If you have a statement from the Norwegian Directorate for Higher Education and Skills (HK-dir), attach this as well.
