PhD Scholarship in Molecular Plant Biology – University of Turku, Finland

Designation

Doctoral Researcher

Research Area

Molecular Plant Biology, Photosynthetic Bacteria, Electron Transfer Mechanisms, Exoelectrogenesis

Location

University of Turku, Turku, Finland

Eligibility/Qualification

  • An MSc in plant science, molecular biology, cell biology, microbiology, biochemistry, biophysics, or a related field.
  • Candidates nearing the completion of their MSc may also be considered.
  • Previous biological, biochemical, or biophysical research experience (thesis, internships, undergraduate projects).
  • Excellent spoken and written English.
  • Preferred skills:
  • Experience in cyanobacterial or algal cell culturing
  • Photosynthesis measurement techniques
  • Microscopy techniques
  • Molecular biology and gene editing
  • Coding skills (e.g., R)

Job Description

The selected candidate will conduct fundamental research to understand how photosynthetic bacteria regulate extracellular electron transfer. The study will encompass the role of circadian rhythms in exoelectrogenesis and the application of this knowledge to sustainable biotechnologies. The research involves working with the cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 and will utilize various state-of-the-art techniques, including:

  • Spectrophotometric techniques for photosynthesis measurement
  • Electrochemical methods for assessing exoelectrogenesis
  • Fluorescence and scanning electrochemical microscopy for visualizing biofilm processes.

The role will initially be Project Researcher until the candidate secures their study right in a doctoral program. If the MSc certificate is not received before starting, the title will be Research Assistant.

How to Apply

Candidates must submit their application through the online application system with the following documents:

  1. Letter of motivation (max 1 page).
  2. Curriculum Vitae (max 2 pages).
  3. Copy of MSc degree certificate (or study register with expected graduation date).
  4. Contact information for three referees.

Last Date to Apply

Applications are open from July 1, 2025, to September 1, 2025, at 16:00 (Europe/Helsinki).
