Scholarship Description:

PhD Scholarship Opportunity – Assessing Sustainability of Carbon Credits in Voluntary Climate Action

As a PhD candidate within the ACHIEVE project, you will embark on a journey to evaluate the sustainability of carbon credits used in voluntary climate action. Your responsibilities will encompass mapping the global landscape of carbon credit generation and utilization, assessing their quality in relation to sustainability goals (including biodiversity), quantifying their climate effectiveness for non-state actors, and identifying avenues to enhance sustainable carbon credit practices. You will collaborate with an international team, engage in conferences and seminars, and publish your research in peer-reviewed journals.

Eligibility: To be eligible for this scholarship, you should:

  • Hold or expect to obtain a Master’s degree in environmental or sustainability science, environmental modeling, or a related interdisciplinary field.
  • Possess demonstrable experience in climate and sustainability impacts of land use or land-based carbon credit schemes, such as through research assistantships or exceptional research-based Master’s theses.
  • Have additional knowledge or experience in integrity and effectiveness of voluntary climate action, life cycle assessment, and environmental modeling.
  • Demonstrate strong computing and analytical skills, particularly in R.
  • Embrace teamwork and be eager to collaborate in an interdisciplinary research setting.
  • Exhibit excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
