PhD Scholarship: Standardizing Multi-omics of Oral Fluids at Malmö University, Sweden

Study in Sweden

Malmö University is inviting applications for a Doctoral research position titled “From variability to validation: standardizing multi-omics of oral fluids for reproducible disease signatures.” This PhD project is part of the national research school BioLabX (Biomedical Laboratory Scientist Research School for eXcellence) and focuses on the development of non-invasive laboratory diagnostics for the future.

Scholarship Overview

DesignationDoctoral Student (PhD)
Research AreaBiomedical Science, Multi-omics, Clinical Diagnostics

Designation

The successful candidate will be appointed as a Doctoral Student in Biomedical Science at the Faculty of Health and Society, Department of Biomedical Science.

Research Area

The project focuses on establishing robust workflows for multi-omics analyses, specifically metabolomics and proteomics. Using oral fluids (primarily saliva) as diagnostic material, the researcher will work on method development, analytical validation, and clinical application, using periodontitis as a model for inflammatory disease. The work bridges biomedical laboratory science, analytical chemistry, and data-driven medicine.

Location

The position is based at the Department of Biomedical Science, Malmö University, Sweden. The researcher will also be affiliated with the Biofilms Research Center for Biointerfaces (BRCB).

Eligibility/Qualification

To be eligible for this doctoral program, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • General Entry: A second-cycle qualification (Master’s degree) or completion of at least 240 credits (including 60 second-cycle credits).
  • Specific Entry: At least 90 ECTS in a subject relevant to the research field, with 30 ECTS at an advanced level.
  • Professional Requirement: A license as a biomedical laboratory scientist (BMA-legitimation) or a Bachelor’s degree in biomedical laboratory science.
  • Language: High proficiency in English (spoken and written).
  • Merit: Experience in bioanalytical method development (mass spectrometry, chromatography), omics data analysis, and statistical processing is highly valued.

Scholarship Description

This doctoral studentship is a fixed-term position for four years. The primary focus is on research studies, though the candidate may spend up to 20% of their time on educational tasks, administration, or other research duties. As part of the BioLabX network, the student will collaborate with several Swedish universities (including Gothenburg, Uppsala, and Karolinska Institutet) to strengthen clinical laboratory medicine research.

How to Apply

Applications must be submitted through the Malmö University recruitment system. The application should include:

  • A comprehensive Curriculum Vitae.
  • Diplomas and transcripts of records, including a Swedish BMA license or Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Laboratory Science.
  • A Research Plan (maximum 4 pages) detailing the focus of research, methodology, and how it relates to this specific project.
  • Copies of independent work at an advanced level (e.g., Master’s thesis).

Note: Applicants with foreign degrees must provide documentation of equivalence from the Swedish Council for Higher Education (UHR) or the National Board of Health and Welfare.
