PhD Studentship: Exploring Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Nutrient Utilization at University of Manchester, UK

Summary

The University of Manchester is offering a fully funded 3.5-year PhD studentship focused on investigating how Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) utilizes nutrients to survive within the human host. This interdisciplinary project combines microbiology, biochemistry, and analytical methods to develop new strategies against Tuberculosis.

Duration3.5 Years
Funding StatusFully Funded (Home Students)
Stipend£21,805 per annum (2026/27 UKRI rate)
Start DateJanuary or April 2027

Research Area

The project sits at the intersection of Microbiology, Pathogen Biochemistry, and Analytical Chemistry. It focuses on nutrient transport mechanisms and how their disruption alters the biology of the tuberculosis pathogen.

Location

The successful candidate will be based at the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology and the Michael Smith Building at the University of Manchester, UK.

Eligibility/Qualification

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Hold (or be about to obtain) at least a 2.1 UK honours degree in a relevant subject.
  • Ideally hold a Master’s level qualification at Merit or Distinction (or international equivalent).
  • A strong interest in pathogen biochemistry is essential.
  • Prior research experience in microbiology and analytical methods is highly desirable.
  • Please note: This funding is currently specified for Home students.

Scholarship Description

Tuberculosis remains a leading cause of death globally, with over 1.3 million deaths in 2024. This PhD project aims to address this health challenge by exploring the metabolic survival strategies of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The researcher will:

  • Identify specific nutrients the pathogen accesses during infection.
  • Use genetic and biochemical techniques to disrupt nutrient transport.
  • Analyze how these disruptions affect pathogen survival and adaptation.
  • Work within a collaborative environment with access to world-class facilities.

The scholarship provides a tax-free annual stipend and covers full tuition fees. The stipend is expected to increase annually in line with UKRI rates.

How to Apply

Candidates should apply directly through the University of Manchester’s online application portal. It is not necessary to contact Professor Elizabeth Fullam before applying unless you require specific technical information regarding the project.
