PhD Studentship -Sensing and Imaging: Join a cutting-edge research project at the University of Edinburgh focused on advancing data-driven computational sensing and imaging technologies. This interdisciplinary project, supervised by Prof. Mike Davies and Prof. James Hopgood, aims to develop novel algorithmic and mathematical frameworks for imaging and sensing systems, with a particular emphasis on RF and electro-optic/IR sensor modalities. As part of this project, you’ll explore machine learning solutions while adhering to verifiable and explainable algorithmic approaches.
PhD Studentship – Data-Driven Computational Sensing and Imaging
Study Area: Data-Driven Computational Sensing and Imaging
Location: The University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, UK
Eligibility/Qualification:
- Minimum entry qualification: Honours degree at 2:1 or above (or international equivalent) in a relevant science or engineering discipline, potentially supported by an MSc degree.
- Eligible applicants: UK or EU students only (International applicants are not eligible due to the defense-related nature of the project).

Description: Today’s advanced imaging and sensing technologies heavily rely on computational methods alongside sensor hardware. This project delves into the intersection of computation, sensing, and machine learning, with a focus on developing verifiable and explainable algorithmic solutions for defense scenarios. The research will explore various algorithmic and machine learning technologies, including low rank models, physics-informed neural networks, and Bayesian architectures. The goal is to enhance sensing system performance while ensuring adherence to necessary physics principles and defense requirements.
Funding:
- Tuition fees and stipend are available for UK and EU applicants only.
- Funding is provided through the EPSRC Prosperity Partnership Programme, with nationality restrictions due to the defense-related nature of the project.
