The Marine Biology Research Group at Ghent University is inviting applications for a full-time Post-doctoral Assistant position. The successful candidate will investigate the influence of human activities on marine food webs and benthic biogeochemistry within the research group led by Prof. Ulrike Braeckman.

Research Area

The post-doctoral researcher will focus on fundamental research within marine biogeochemistry and food web ecology, specifically examining how human activities alter benthic biogeochemical cycles and food web dynamics. The project involves experimental work, field campaigns at sea, and sediment biogeochemical or ecological food web modelling.

Eligibility & Qualifications

  • Academic Degree: A thesis-based PhD/Doctorate obtained maximum 6 years ago, preferably in Doctor of Science: Biology, Doctor of Science: Marine Sciences, or an equivalent relevant field.
  • Expertise: Strong background and experience in sediment biogeochemical modelling or marine food web modelling.
  • Fieldwork Readiness: Willingness and ability to participate in marine sampling campaigns at sea (ranging from several days to one week).
  • Research & Publications: A proven track record of scientific publications in international peer-reviewed journals.
  • Language & Communication: Excellent communication and presentation skills in English, suitable for academic dissemination and interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Proposal Writing: Readiness to contribute to research grant applications and proposals.

Job Description & Responsibilities

  • Perform fundamental and applied research in marine food web ecology and benthic biogeochemistry under the supervision of Prof. Ulrike Braeckman.
  • Conduct data analysis and develop biogeochemical/food web models.
  • Take part in marine research expeditions and sampling campaigns.
  • Support academic education by supervising Bachelor and Master thesis students and assisting with practical/theoretical biology and ecology courses.
  • Prepare high-quality scientific manuscripts and present research findings at international conferences.
